The College of Design at Georgia Tech hosted guests from the University of Korea for a brief forum in May of 2025. Department chair Dr. Eunsook Kwon felt the Interactive Media Zone could be used to welcome guests by showing student’s work on the Royal Procession of the Joseon Dynasty.
Create an exhibit that depicts the royal protocols of the Joseon Dynasty, highlighting banchado (paintings) of the emperor’s procession through Korea.
The initial moodboards for this project centered around Korean snack packaging, Korean architecture, and Uigwe (collection of royal protocols - including banchado).
The Korean architecture moodboard was chosen because of the simple geometry and darker color palette. These features would best suit the backdrop of the exhibit because of how they illuminate the banchado while adding a subtle nod to the longstanding art of munsal (korean latticework).
The exhibit features 8 panels of banchado, depicting the royal procession of the emperor through Korea, and a painting of hanbok weaving. The curve of the screen features the title and fades between the outline of the Hwaseong fortress and outlined drawings of traditional hanbok.
The touchscreens (not pictured) on the left side of the IMZ explain the royal procession seen in the banchado. Touchscreens on the right side of the IMZ explain the process of making hanbok and their cultural significance.
